The Barton Reading & Spelling System is an Orton-Gillingham influenced program that teaches phonemic awareness skills before phonics and integrates reading with spelling as directly related skills. It is a research and evidence based system that produces excellent results because it uses a multisensory method of explicit, intense instruction designed to help students with dyslexia. A more recent term for this type of program is Structured Literacy, and it is still considered the gold standard of remediation for dyslexic students.
